Intent

At Kirk Smeaton School, when teaching DT we intend for pupils to develop their design and making skills through specialised knowledge and understand of different designs using a variety of technology. We aim to broaden pupils accessibility by using a range of tools and materials and identifying through a brief the best suited material for their end product. 

Through the teaching of DT, children have a fantastic opportunity to work collaboratively on projects and evaluate products, made by themselves, their peer groups and external companies. DT at Kirk Smeaton provides children to become creative thinkers and learners, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.

Not only will children be creative through this subject, but will also learn about working safely and using protective measures. Children will also develop the capability to create products of a high standard, matching the teaching expectations. It enables students to link DT to aspects of the 'real-world'  through developing an interest in and an understanding of technological processes and the role of manufacturing in society as well as exploring the man-made world and encourage discussion of how we live and work within it.

Implementation 

Design and Technology skills and understanding are built into lessons, following an iterative process. However, this is not to say that this structure should be followed rigidly: it allows for the revision of ideas to become part of good practice and ultimately helps to build a depth to children's understanding. Through revisiting and consolidating skills, our lesson plans and resources help children build on prior knowledge alongside introducing new skills, knowledge and challenge. The revision and introduction of key vocabulary is built into each lesson. This vocabulary is then included in display materials and additional resources to ensure that children are allowed opportunities to repeat and revise this knowledge. Through Design and Technology lessons, we intend to inspire pupils and practitioners to develop a love of Design and Technology and see how it has helped shaped the ever-evolving technological world they live in.

Impact

The impact of using the full range of resources, will be seen across the school with an increase in the profile of Design and Technology, especially where there are strong DT links to topics. Whole-school and parental engagement will be encouraged through the use of design and technology-specific home learning tasks and opportunities suggested in lessons and overviews for wider learning. We want to ensure that Design and Technology is loved by teachers and pupils across school, therefore encouraging them to want to continue building on this wealth of skills and understanding, now and in the future. Impact can be measured through key questioning skills built into lessons, pupil voice, child-led assessment such as success criteria grids, and summative assessments aimed at targeting next steps in learning.
